Dark Nature opens with an intense and authentic horror scene, immediately capturing the audience’s attention. Joy is engrossed in preparing dinner when Derek storms in, visibly furious. Joy narrowly escapes his wrath, but tragically, their family dog doesn’t survive. Fast forward six months, and Joy, still grappling with the trauma, reluctantly joins Carmen on a camping trip combined with therapy sessions under the guidance of Dr. Dunnely, accompanied by a group of women seeking healing. As the journey unfolds, the women begin experiencing unsettling flashbacks and haunting visions tied to their past traumas. Joy grows increasingly suspicious of Dr. Dunnely and becomes convinced that Derek is relentlessly stalking them. The discovery of evidence pointing to a predator’s presence heightens the tension. Set against the stunning backdrop of the Canadian Rockies, gorgeously captured by cinematographer Jaryl Lim, the film blends breathtaking beauty with a pervasive sense of danger. The skillful use of sound, incorporating eerie forest noises, whispered voices, and the distinct click of Derek’s Zippo lighter, adds to the pervasive unease. The creature itself, expertly designed by Kyra Macpherson and brought to life by Luke Moore, offers a truly eerie and distinctive presence. Although some character development could be improved, Dark Nature successfully weaves together themes of abuse, PTSD, and guilt within a traditional creature-in-the-woods narrative, resulting in a thought-provoking and effective cinematic experience.
